We have a facebook page named La Junta Animal Shelter. We post daily pics of dogs that have been brought in to the shelter in an effort to quickly unite them with their owners.
The La Junta Municipal Animal Shelter is a PACFA licensed facility, licensed through the Colorado Department of Agriculture. We are managed through the La Junta Police Department Code Enforcement Division.
Effective August 10, 2015 the hours for the pound will be:
Monday thru Friday 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Saturday 8:30 am to 10:30 am
Sunday facility is CLOSED: however all animals will be taken care of on Sunday and phone calls will be returned, please leave a message and sometime during the day Sunday your call will be returned. Facility personel will call and make arrangements to meet dog owners at the facility should the need arise.
The La Junta Animal Shelter is not a rescue facility and therefore can not accept surrendered pets. Please see below for rescue organization information.

6.12.010 Owner Defined:Owner means any person owning, keeping or harboring a dog.
6.12.20 Abandoment Prohibited: It is unlawful for any person to abandon or cause to be abandoned any dog.
6.12.040 Vacciantion Required: All dogs over 6 months of age that are kept or harbored shall be vaccinated for rabies.
6.12.100 Impoundment: Upon impoundment of each dog, a registration of each dog shall be made.
6.12.110 Impoundment Fees: First 4 days of INITIAL offense - $50.00 Any subsequent days - $10/day
First 4 days of SECOND offense - $75.00 Any subsequent days - $10/day
First 4 days of THIRD offense - $100.00 Any subsequent days - $10/day
Dog Bite Cases: The dog is quarentined for a minimum of 10 days per State Health Department regulations. If the dog is quarentined at the shelter there is a charge of $10 per day for a total of $100.00. Prior to leaving the shelter the dog must be current on its rabies vacine. All dogs must be picked up by the owner. Dogs brought into the shelter during a bite case can not be euthanized by shelter personnel due to state regulations.
